The Space

A rustic handcrafted house on 40 secluded acres in New York's scenic Hudson Valley. The Woods Retreat is located in the heart of Ulster County, and the foothills of the Catskill mountains in the High Falls/Stone Ridge/Rosendale area. Close to New Paltz, Kingston, Woodstock and the Ashokan reservoir, the Woods Retreat is right across the river from Rhinebeck, Hyde Park and Poughkeepsie. This unique house was built and designed as a peaceful get-away with modern comforts, using local wood & stone and an open floor plan. We have a fully stocked kitchen with new stainless steel appliances. We make sure there are spices, an assortment of teas plus either house roasted or locally roasted, organic, free trade coffee beans for grinding. Our digitally controlled kettle will heat your coffee or tea water to the precise temperature to ensure your morning coffee/tea is perfect and you will always find fresh light cream in the refrigerator. We have all the accoutrements you need to prepare an outstanding meal, or to simply heat something up in the microwave. There is a brand new front loading, HE washer, dryer set in the utility room. The upstairs open loft has a queen size bed and huge south facing windows. The sleeper sofa downstairs opens to a queen size bed and we have two single fold up futons, (they are the perfect size for a young child) we can bring out of storage if needed. The upstairs bathroom has a whirlpool tub and we make sure there are bath salts available for a leisurely relaxing spa bath. We have a woodstove/fireplace and in the colder months we make sure wood and kindling are always available. There is a stone patio outside with a gas grill and al fresco dining is an option on the patio in good weather or in the screened, shaded gazebo. We provide clean linens and the beds will be made upon your arrival. There is also satellite TV and internet service available. It's quiet and secluded while being a short distance [5 miles] from a major road. There are views of the Catskills and seasonal views of Mohonk Mountain. The area is known for its abundance of great restaurants, art galleries, antiquing, and hiking as well as rock climbing in the Shawangunks and many historic sites. The Belleayre and Hunter Mountain ski region is within an hour's drive. Whether you're looking for a quiet, secluded weekend away, or a private & special base from which to venture forth, the Woods Retreat is an experience not to be missed!

Guest Access

Our guests have full use of the house and surrounding woods. The barn and woodshed are off limits. We welcome well behaved pets for an additional $25 fee that can be paid upon your arrival. However, if your dog has behavior issues and/or can't be trusted, please leave them at home.

Interaction with Guests

I will greet you upon arrival, hand over the keys and answer any questions you have about the house or area. I keep a low profile [I live 15 minutes away], but am available should you need anything. The house is a quarter of a mile off the road so you can be assured of complete privacy. There is plenty of wildlife, but no people to intrude on your peace & quiet!

The Neighborhood

The house is located on a private road, off a country lane, off a country road. While there are several other houses on the road, none are close—you can't see them and they can't see you. The nearest village of Stone Ridge has a well-equipped, lovely country market with a large organic section. There is a great wine and liquor store, a terrific library housed in a beautiful stone house and several farmers markets with locally grown fruits and vegetables. The valley, located between the Shawangunks and the foothills of the Catskills is one of exceptional beauty that attracts both visual and performing artists.

Getting Around

The house is quite secluded so a car is necessary. In winter we strongly recommend you have snow tires or an all wheel drive vehicle as the driveway is long and quite steep. We make sure that it is always plowed, but you will still need some extra traction to get up the hill.

Other Things to Note

We have a strict no-smoking policy in the house, however you may smoke outside on the patio or in the gazebo. Please be considerate and use an ash tray —Do not toss or put out cigarettes on the ground. We welcome well behaved pets for an additional $25 fee that can be paid upon your arrival. However, if your dog has behavior issues and/or can't be trusted, please leave them at home.

Millions of people are using Airbnb to sleep in strangers' homes, beds, and even couches. They have an amazing selection and you can't find their stuff anywhere else. There is a catch: you often need to contact several hosts to actually get a place to stay, so make sure you give yourself some lead time.

Place's rules

We hope that our guests will leave the house neat and tidy. If you move the furniture please put it back where you found it. The kitchen should be clean, stove top and counters wiped clean, (I mean really cleaned, — with one of the surface cleaners we supply that can be found in the cabinet to the right of the sink) dishes and pots washed and garbage tightly tied and placed in one of the supplied garbage bags and then put in the garbage can in the utility room. All recycled bottles, jars and cans should be rinsed and allowed to drain before being stored in the two drawers in the cabinet to the left of the sink. Do not put stainless steel cookware in the dishwasher, (If you accidentally burn something on the stove put the pan in the sink to soak, then use steel wool). Smoking is not permitted in the house. You may smoke outside but do not leave cigarette butts on the grounds or toss them into the woods, (it's a fire hazard)— use an ashtray and make sure your cigarettes are out before you empty your ashtray in the trash. We expect guests who use the outdoor grill to make sure it is clean after any grilling. If you find it has been used previously and not cleaned, please let us know —We don't always have time to check everything in between guests. Please do not leave wet towels lying on the floor. The wood shed and the barn are off limits to guests. During the winter months we make sure the house is stocked with a generous amount of firewood for use in the wood stove during your stay. We have changed our check-in and check-out times. Check-in is between 4pm & 7pm, check-out is 12noon. If we are expecting guests on the day of your departure we ask that you leave by 11am so we can clean and set-up for our new guests. We can be more flexible with both arrival and departure times if you make an arrangement with us ahead of time. We welcome well behaved pets for an additional $25 fee (per pet), that can be paid upon your arrival. However, if your dog has behavior issues and/or can't be trusted, please leave them at home. We also expect you to clean up after your dog does his business outside and we keep plenty of poop bags on hand for that purpose. We do not permit hunting on our property —firearms are not allowed. Please check the house for your belongings before you leave. We cannot ship or mail items that have been left behind and please, please, please do not leave any perishable foodstuff in the refrigerator. No one really wants someone else's leftovers. If it's something stinky or something that could become stinky just put it in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer. It is important that you close all the windows and lock the doors when you leave. Our house is very special to us and we expect our guests to respect the house and the surrounding property.
