Asia-Pacific is the 2nd highest earning region, with an average host earnings of $8,621 in 2020. In Europe the average host made $7,257 in Airbnb earnings in 2020. Airbnb hosts in Latin America and Africa made less on average, with hosts making $5,146 and $4,939 in 2020, respectively in those regions.

The country with the highest average Airbnb host earnings is the United States of America. The average host in the USA made $24,886 in host earnings on Airbnb in 2020, compared to $23,786 in 2019. Australia is the second highest earning country, with hosts pocketing on average $16,148 in 2020, which is slightly down from the $16,524 they made in 2019. The UK comes in third, with British Airbnb hosts making $12,154 in 2020 on average. This represents a significant drop from 2019 when they made $14,532 on average.

Of the 15 largest markets in the country, the U.S. city with the highest average Airbnb host earnings is San Diego, where hosts on average made $35,073 in 2020 on Airbnb – this represents a slight drop from $35,911 in 2019. In second place comes Kissimmee, where Airbnb hosts on average made $33,726 in 2020, which was significantly down from 2019 when hosts made $39,398. Las Vegas rounds out the top three, with Airbnb hosts on average making $24,971 in 2020, a drop from 2019 when they made $29,213 on average.

When looking at the 15 largest markets in Canada, the Canadian city with the highest average Airbnb host earnings is Whistler. Airbnb hosts made on average $33,496 in this ski resort market in 2020 – considerably lower than in 2019 when they made $41,128 on average. In second place in Canada is Les Laurentides, where Airbnb hosts made $21,522 on average in 2020, up from $19,077 in 2019. Third place goes to Kelowna, where hosts made $13,303 on average in 2020, slightly up from $13,138 in 2019.

Filtering for the 15 largest UK markets, the British city with the highest average Airbnb host earnings is Bath. Airbnb hosts in the historical city of Bath took home on average $20,401 in 2020. Like many markets in the UK and worldwide, the short-term rental market in Bath suffered during 2020 due to COVID-19. In 2019 Airbnb hosts in the same market generated $25,005 on average. The next highest earning location in the UK for Airbnb hosts was the city of York, where hosts made $15,597 on average in 2020, again down from 2019 when they made $21,795. After Bath and York, Cheltenham was the third highest earning location. Airbnb hosts in Cheltenham made on average $13,458 in 2020, down from $15,773 in 2019.

Of the 15 largest Australian markets, the Australian city with the highest average Airbnb host earnings is the coastal town of Byron Bay. Airbnb hosts in Byron Bay made on average $45,587 in 2020 – not far off from their 2019 average of $43,102. The second highest earning location for Airbnb hosts was Noosa Heads, where hosts made on average $31,544 in 2020, which was slightly higher than 2019 when they made $43,102. The third highest average Airbnb host earnings in Australia in 2020 were found in Surfers Paradise in Queensland, where hosts pulled in $22,673, slightly down from 2019 when they made $28,729 on average.

Average Annual Host Revenue In The U.S. By Room Count: 2020/2019

On average, the more rooms your listing has, and the more guests you can accommodate, the more you can expect to earn on Airbnb. 

For listings with 4 rooms or more the average Airbnb host earnings in the U.S. was $43,709 in 2020 – a significant jump from 2019 when 4+ room Airbnb properties made their hosts on average $36,626. Listings with 3 rooms made on average $26,417 in 2020, slightly up from the 2019 level of $24,164, and listings with 2 rooms pulled in $19,726 on average in 2020, which was more or less flat vs. 2019 when they made $20,874 on average. 

As you would expect, listings with smaller room counts like 1 room and studio apartment listings made their hosts the least, with 1 room listings making $11,878 on average in 2020 (compared to $13,861 in 2019) and studio apartments made $13,305 on average in 2020 (compared to $16,346 in 2019).

Average Annual Host Revenue In The U.S. By Review Count: 2020/2019

In theory, you might expect that the more favorable reviews an Airbnb listing has, the greater it’s earning potential. This is true up to a point – Airbnb listings with 51-100 reviews on average earned $25,012 in the U.S. in 2020, which is higher than the average for listings with more than 100 reviews, which was $23,694 in 2020 and $31,122 in 2019.

Properties with zero or a few reviews tend to make less for their hosts. Airbnb hosts listing short-term rental properties with 0 reviews made on average $5,799 in 2020, which was significantly lower than the $8,635 they made in 2019. Airbnb hosts operating listings with 1-5 reviews took home $7,320 on average, which was higher than the $5,291 they made in 2019.
