The Neighborhood

Hi, I'm Johanna and I absolutely love living on Sanday. Although I haven't lived here long I can help you with anything you need to know to enjoy and make the most of your stay. The highlight of your stay here has to be the island itself. So beautiful. We are nestled beside a fresh water loch and back onto a bay which is usually very calm. There is so much wildlife to see. Hundreds of seals or 'selkies' gather here for their annual moult. You can watch some of the seals from our raised decking in the garden whilst you enjoy breakfast or a evening drink. You may even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of an otter. There is 5000 years of history here which includes a chambered burial chairn as well as shipwrecks and buildings from both world wars. Our neighbourhood is dominated by sky, sea and fields. There is no industry on Sanday, only farming and fishing. You are likely to look out the window and see geese in the garden or curlews, lapwings and oystercatchers. Our house is very private with only one close neighbour. Your bed has a comfortable orthopaedic memory foam mattress and clean crisp bedding. There are towels laid out for your convenience. If you forget anything we can provide you with most essentials. A free breakfast is included in the price of the room. You can have a choice of porridge, cereal, toast, fresh fruit or yogurt. Or all of them if you are hungry!! You are more than welcome to use our kitchen should you decide to cook a meal or I can recommend a couple of places to eat, although being a small island there are not many places to choose from. The local pub, The Kettletoft does good food including fish and chips, eat in or takeaway twice a week. My favorite resturant is at Backaskaill Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast. Geoff cooks a wonderful meal and Jane is the perfect hostess. If you want a meal cooked with local produce and an attention to detail you won't be disappointed. I have a copy of their menu and can phone through your order for you. Alternativly, I would be more than happy to prepare a meal for you at an extra cost. Picnics can also be prepared for you should you want to explore the island. I can point you in the right direction of some amazing white sandy beaches. We are a dog friendly house. We have 3 dogs of our own who after an initial bark will love you to bits. We don't place a limit on the dogs you can bring and can provide a dog blanket should you wish your pet to sleep on the bed. As there are no doggy poo bins on the island we provide you with the loan of stylish holders which consist of free poo bags, a freshener and a bag that clips to your belt so you don't have to carry the poo bags!!! We also provide doggy towels should your guys decide to go for a swim.

Getting Around

Getting here is an exciting adventure in itself. You can fly into Kirkwall airport on the Orkney Mainland and then take the island hopper plane over to Sanday's airstrip where I will be happy to collect you. If you fancy a more leisurely sea crossing you can sail from Scrabster or Gills Bay to the Orkney Mainland and then catch another ferry to Sanday. I will be happy to collect you from the ferry if you are not bringing a car or alternatively, you may wish to experience our island minibus service. Just let me know so I can book it for you. There is a small charge of about £2 to £3 per person. There is no public transport on Sanday but should you wish to explore we can provide a taxi service for a small charge. Other Things to Note

Please note that we are pet friendly and this does mean we have pets. 3 dogs and 1 cat. We also take in boarders so may have more animals than this. We have an enclosed back garden where dogs can run off lead. In the warmer months we have an agility field set up and dog training sessions are available. If you are not "animal freindly" that is fine as all our dogs have their own areas and do not need to mix with guests. There are 2 pubs on the island and a fish and chip shop that opens on a saturday. One of the pubs also serve take away or eat-in fish and chips on a Wednesday and Saturday. There are also village shops and post offices dotted around the island. Don't miss the Heritage Centre or "The Croft". The island has three lochs stocked with trout. I could tell you more but it will spoil the surprise - come and discover what else Sanday has to offer. This is a special place and I have had some wonderful guests stay with me. Just let me know if you have any questions, I am always available to help you make the most of your stay. I look forward to meeting you.

Millions of people are using Airbnb to sleep in strangers' homes, beds, and even couches. They have an amazing selection and you can't find their stuff anywhere else. There is a catch: you often need to contact several hosts to actually get a place to stay, so make sure you give yourself some lead time.

Place's rules

Smoking is not allowed in the house but we have a lovely decking area which overlooks the bay where you are more than welcome to smoke. You are more than welcome to return to your room or use the facilities during the day. We are easy going but like a tidy house so would expect guests to leave a room as they found it. As we are on an island we would appreciate it if guests could conserve water as much as possible and we will only change bedding and towels when asked to. BYOB is allowed with no corkage charge. We enjoy a glass or two (or three!!) of wine or whiskey!! Normal check-in time: 3pm - 7pm Normal check-out time: 10am We are flexible as you will be dependant on ferry times and you are more than welcome to use our lounge after check-out should you be waiting for a ferry. I can also provide free and secure storage of your luggage for your convenience.
