Modernist: Outside, large colorful canvases by celebrated Aussie artist Charles Blackman decorate the hotel’s black glass façade; inside the show continues with a blaze of expressive artwork on a gallery-size wall behind the reception desk. In the lobby, vibrant teapots spill tiny flowers, and rabbit-shaped lamps dot the floor — all taking their cue from Blackman’s most famous series, which was inspired by Alice in Wonderland. Two black velvet wing chairs are positioned to give you a front row seat.

There’s more of Blackman’s thought-provoking art in the luxe, self-contained studio suites. Startled life-size Alice images are etched on frosted glass doors leading to marble-tiled bathrooms stocked with quirky Evo products. Elegant champagne-tone carpets, walls, kitchen surfaces and curtains are funked up by purple cushions and acrylic glass chairs. Balconies, with black metal tables and chairs, extend the modern open-plan space.
Two dining options on the lobby level spill out to sunny alfresco areas shaded by umbrellas. Fleur Depot de Pain is a French patisserie, café and deli serving fresh-baked breads, pastries and cakes, and fine coffee, from breakfast to sunset. Classico, an Italian pizzeria, restaurant and bar, is open for all day dining, including breakfast. While the small gym and the rental bikes can help you burn off the tempting delectables, the mopeds and Smart cars available to rent are just another treat.
