TEXT Salomon Alvarez our local contractor, neighbor and an invaluable asset to the Castle: (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)
*English is Salomon’s 2nd language so texting is best, begin with: I’m staying at Rod Keenan's and briefly state the issue. Salomon will return text almost immediately and usually drop everything to be there and fix whatever needs 'fixing.'

The closest Police 'House' is located at the West end of the block, on 7th Ave, (Frederick Douglass Blvd) between 122nd and 123rd streets.

Lastly, but certainly not last, The Partner or: 'PHJ’
In case of EXTREME emergency -a zombie apocalypse for instance, or other occasion when everyone else on The Castle contact list has been rendered 'unavailable', call the partner 'PHJ' at: (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)
*However as PHJ is more often out of country, should local emergencies or the above scenario occur, there may be little by way of help he can offer, and similarly by time of contact, he may have already been 'turned’...
The Keeping of The Castle
Our irreplaceable Housekeeper Ala, is at the Castle twice weekly every Monday and alternating Wednesdays and Fridays. She arrives between 7-9:00a.m. Ala will work around your morning routine, simply leave your bedroom door closed or the suite door closed until you are up and about. However, be aware that if guest area doors remain closed until she leaves, you'll have to wait until her next visit for guest area freshening.
Ala is Polish and speaks a little English -but smiles and the (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) TRANSLATE app go a long way to aid communication.
Laundry: you may arrange laundry service with Ala -we suggest 10.00 per load, or we suggest Grace Cleaners, dry cleaning and laundry service at 124th St and St. Nicholas Ave, or you may prefer to see to your own laundry at: Baby Girl’s Bubbles & Cleaners between 120th and 119th on Frederick Douglass Blvd.
*We ask for your help between Ala's visits, in light Castle upkeep by returning dishware to the kitchen or dishwasher or 'where it belongs' after use -if you don't know where kitchen 'somethings' go, leave them by the kitchen sink. Straightening and fluffing cushions as needed, folding and neatly stacking magazines and The Times after perusing -as you would in your own home- is very much appreciated.
Ala is family and we’re sure you'll agree, a wonderful asset to your stay at the Castle. Please appreciate her -tips, small gifts of candy or flowers, or just a heartfelt 'thanks’, are always appreciated.
**thank you very much in Polish, is pronounced: Gin Koo-YA Bard-zo!
King of The Castle
Ferris is top priority at The Castle. He is very curious and affectionate.
While he is allowed to explore all of the adjoining gardens behind the Castle, Ferris is NOT allowed to go beyond the front door.
Please be sure when entering and exiting the Castle that he doesn't slip outside -this is easily done by making sure our door is closed with Ferris inside, before opening the front door.
*YES, we are overly cautious with Ferris, but where Ferris is concerned, overly cautious is best if you are in the least unsure of how to proceed on his behalf.
Ferris is a 'cuddlebug'. He will snuggle with you as allowed and may even curl up with you for slumber parties.
*If you'd rather he not share your bed or guest area, keep the guest suite doors closed -Ferris has plenty of soft places to land, all over the Castle.
Feeding: if you are the first up in the morning, please give Ferris 1 scoop of his kibble located in the Canopic jar next to his food dish, the scoop is in the jar -even if kibble bits are present, it's the 'newness' of a fresh kibble scoop that matters to Ferris and we defer to his wishes on this matter.
Fresh water is also appreciated first thing in the morning and throughout the day as needed especially in the summer months.
Treats can be found in Ferris's cabinet below his food dish and in the guest suite, please feel free to offer a few treats on occasion.
Toys are located around the Castle and greatly appreciated when employed.
The Gardens: Ferris IS allowed into the gardens, to call him in again, shake a treat bag vigorously over the balcony railing, clap it against one hand then wait and listen -you can hear his collar from a distance. One or two calls of 'Ferris’ helps, but too many calls and too loud a call will only discourage his return, be patient and if time is of the essence in getting him inside, call him in at least ½ an hour before leaving.
*Please remember, it’s not personal, he's on Ferris time.
Ferris's GPS locator: Ferris wears a 'Tile' tag (URL HIDDEN) Which will pinpoint his location if he goes missing.
*Similarly, if you are NOT comfortable allowing Ferris outside, or in your ability to call him in, he can grudgingly find enjoyment inside –extra treats, extra cuddling and extra play will help here.
In the event of a medical emergency, please take Ferris immediately *by car NOT train* to:
THE ANIMAL MEDICAL CENTER,
510 E 62nd St, NY,NY (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)
Ferris' Vet: Dr. Jennifer Chaitman
207 East 84th St, NY, NY (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)
The Castle is home, office, studio, showroom and guest house. As such we have but a few rules in order to maintain the life/work/guest balance.
The guest suite, kitchen, front parlor and terrace balcony are for your use but please be aware, the front parlor is also an occasional showroom and leave it in good order after use.
*please enjoy the balcony terrace, but we request you pass through the back parlor which is family area, to access the balcony.
When not in immediate use, please keep personal belongings in the guest suite.
Please keep guest guests to a few.
*for more than 3 guests, tea, brunch or supper entertaining, please ask first to be sure our calendar is free. Similarly and for the comfort of all involved, no overnights unless cleared first with your very understanding host: “I’ve fallen madly in love!” or, “My BFF’s coming for spring break!” –is usually all the ‘heads up’ Ala and I will need.
Smoking is outdoors only, please be sure the balcony doors are closed tightly, and properly dispose of your smoking materials.
Please use Coasters everywhere!
Quiet Hours are Midnight to 10 a.m
*it is New York after all, but our garden neighbors with small children next door and opposite our garden fence, will appreciate the consideration -despite the outer neighborhood’s sometimes very exuberant ambiance.
The basement studio is off limits unless household emergency requires access.
Likewise, when in New York, my office hours are 11-6.
* certainly DO text if you need me, but please be mindful that I work from home and clients may be in and out as well.
Please use our kitchen. Dishware, cutlery and other cooking gadgets are for your use.
*Likewise, please use the kitchen fan when cooking fragrant foods (switch is located to the right of kitchen), clean up after cooking and tightly repackage all food stuffs.
Coffee and Tea: Please DO enjoy a Nesspresso or tea and whatever other delectables you find in the refrigerator, larder and the ‘snack stash’ located in the middle cabinet of the black China cabinet opposite the kitchen
Leftovers: Prior to your departure, please dispose of or take with you, any extra food and groceries you’ve purchased during your stay.
*while we discourage food waste and encourage our guest’s home cooking --unless it’s Kaluga and Krug ’28-- we simply don’t have the refrigerator or pantry space to store left behind foodstuffs.
We recycle and compost: Compost canister is by the sink, Ala will take it to the composter. Landfill waste is under the sink. Paper, Glass and Plastic recycling go to the labeled bins in the front parlor closet. Please rinse recyclables before tossing.
Refuse, If I am out of town, please move it to the curb on Thursday evening (refuse is kept in the hutch below the front steps). Ala will have taken everything out, it’s already neatly packaged and just needs to go to the curb. This favor is greatly appreciated.
Mail and packages, If I’m away please store all under and around the desk opposite the stairwell as needed.
Please be sure to lock all gates when leaving or retiring. Please be sure to lock the inner door behind you on leaving and pull closed or push shut, our sometimes ‘wonky’ street door. We’ve never had a security issue at the Castle and we’d like to keep it that way.
