A BRIEF HISTORY OF MONTPARNASSE
The name Montparnasse comes from "Mount Parnassus", the place where students were in the habit of coming to recite their poetry.
During the 18th Century, the boulevard Montparnasse became run down and during the Revolution numerous dance halls and cabarets opened up.
Montparnasse became very popular at the beginning of the 20th Century as Paris's centre of intellectual and artistic activity. Hordes of people from all over the world came to live the bohemian life. The area also became a refuge for political exiles like Lenin and Trotsky.
The most popular pastime of the inhabitants of the district was that of engaging in endless discussion in one of the back-to-back cafés, such as the Rotonde, the Select, the Dome, the Closerie des Lilas or the Coupole. Here great men such as Zadkine, Paul Fort, Apollinaire, Max Jacob, Hemingway, Fargue, Breton, Cocteau, Fitzgerald, Henry Miller, Miro, Foujita and more left their indelible imprint on its history.
