Description

The Space

Kaikyūya Kitakyobate House is our retreat from the busy life in the city. It is a fully renovated Japanese house built during the Showa-era with nostalgic interior and modern amenities, well equipped for comfortable long stays of a family or a group of friends. We have two Japanese- style bedrooms interconnected with sliding doors (each accommodates up to 3 people) and a Western-type bedroom with a semi-double bed on the second floor. Two of the bedrooms have access to the terrace overlooking a quiet Nara back-street. The living room on the first floor is a nice space to relax after a long sightseeing day and enjoy our vinyl records collection of Japanese and Western music from the 30-ies to the 80-ies. The living room is connected to the kitchen and the dining area through a sliding door, which makes it possible to use it as an additional bedroom, accommodating two on the convertible sofa-bed, if needed. The maximum sleeping capacity of the house is 9 people, but it is most comfortable for up to 5-6. The kitchen and the dining area are equipped with a fridge, cooking oven/microwave, gas range with grill, hot-pot and drip-coffee maker for starting your day. The washing/drying machine, toilet, bathroom with Japanese bath tub, are all on the first floor. When renovating these areas, we tried to preserve the feeling of the late Showa-era by favoring wood and tiles over modern plastic.

Guest Access

This is and independent house all for you.

Interaction with Guests

As much as we would like to meet all of our guests in person, we are not always able to. We have our day jobs and three small kids that keep us busy and we live in another town. Nara is our favourite place in Japan and we want to share our passion for the area with the world. We are always available for advice and support and we have a very comprehensive and complete house guide to help you find the house and get your key. This makes the check in more flexible and easy for our guests as well as for us. We promise to make every effort to meet you at some point during your stay (if you like).

The Neighborhood

The house is located in Kyobate-cho - a neighbourhood that has retained much of the old Japan charm. You will find a 100 years old sake store, an old soy-sauce factory, 5 public baths, old temples and many more fun places just as you step out of the house. Right next to Naramachi - the old merchant town of Nara - the house gives you the opportunity to visit all the major tourist sights on foot as well as to explore the numerous cafés, shops and restaurants hidden in the narrow alleys.

Getting Around

Nara is extremely well connected to Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe with express trains and direct lines. Using Nara as a base will give you the opportunity to explore some of the hidden gems of Japan like Hase-dera, Kashihara-jingu, Ninja-mura and so on. I will be happy to provide you with suggestions and tips. The house is only 300 meters from a JR station - very convenient for JR pass holders. The Kintetsu Rail Pass is another budget opportunity to explore all the Kansai region.

Other Things to Note

If you wish to use our house as a base it is suitable for day trips to : KYOTO- Nara and Kyoto are connected with frequent train service and the rapid trains will take you there in 40 minutes. UJI and FUSHIMI - on the JR Nara line on the way to Kyoto you will find the charming city of Uji, famous for green tea, Genji monogatari and the Byodoin temple with its gorgeous garden. It is a 20 min train ride from JR Nara station. KOYASAN - via the Wakayama line you can get to Hashimoto station directly (100 min.) and then transfer to Nankai line to get to Koyasan stn. YOSHINO and ASUKA - new bus tours departing from Nara will take you to the famous cherry mountain of Yoshino and Asuka village - the cradle of Japanese culture. OSAKA - the Nara JR line will take you directly to Tennoji and Namba for a fun day (or maybe night) trip to the gourmet capital of Japan. HASEDERA and KASHIHARA - wonderful temple complexes with rich history and beautiful settings. Take the Wakayama line to Sakurai (25 min) and transfer there for a short train ride.

Millions of people are using Airbnb to sleep in strangers' homes, beds, and even couches. They have an amazing selection and you can't find their stuff anywhere else. There is a catch: you often need to contact several hosts to actually get a place to stay, so make sure you give yourself some lead time.
