The Space

Absolutely authentic Kyrgyz village house. You'll be sleeping on traditional Kyrgyz sleeping mats called "Tushuks." The toilet is out back, and if you want to shower you may need to try out the village Banya (Sauna). The village of Kyzyl Oi is isolated from the surrounding areas by around 20 kms of red rock gorge on either side of the village. The narrow gravel road runs fairly level along the river through the gorge. The home is accessible year round in a well equipped car or better a Jeep. During the summer there is great hiking in the area and a chance to get out and visit nomadic families in the area. During winter the area can be skied by the most adventurous, but mostly people go to see the stunning snow covered mountains. This is my personal favorite of all the villages of Kyrgyzstan, I love Kyzyl Oi! I work with a few village families who want to host visitors, but lack the internet skills to list their places. Most of the fees here go directly to the family.

Guest Access

You'll be staying in a small farmhouse style building across from the families home. When you book we'll get you exact directions to the home. Addresses don't really work in villages.

Interaction with Guests

We can set everything up for you and you can drive yourself there. If you need transportation we can rent you a Jeep or van that is equipped to get there or we can arrange a vehicle and driver for you. Just let us know what you'll need or want.

The Neighborhood

The best thing about this area of Kyrgyzstan is the absolutely stunning red rocks and the feeling of isolation. It's just the perfect, peaceful place. Kyzyl Oi is the only known Kyrgyz village that predates collectivization, so it has a very different character from the many Soviet collective based villages throughout the country.

Getting Around

Public transit in this area is lacking. You can take public transit as far as the turn to Suusamyr after the Too Ashu pass, then you'll have to hitch hike the last 50 or so kilometers to Kyzyl Oi. Otherwise you can hire a car and driver in Bishkek or we can arrange one for you.

Other Things to Note

Please note that this home has standard village conditions and not western luxuries. If you need a plush bed and a flushing toilet, this is probably not for you. But if you love to experience other people's lives, then this is perfect.

Millions of people are using Airbnb to sleep in strangers' homes, beds, and even couches. They have an amazing selection and you can't find their stuff anywhere else. There is a catch: you often need to contact several hosts to actually get a place to stay, so make sure you give yourself some lead time.

Place's rules

Please be respectful to the family. It's ok to drink, but please avoid getting drunk. Most of the family does not speak English, but as long as you work at it, communication is no problem with their limited English.
