The Space

King size bed with views of the starry night sky while lying on your bed under the skylight on the second floor of an old New England farmhouse. You'll use the guest front door entrance (Website hidden by Airbnb) The family uses the side door. Oriental carpet for doing morning yoga. Private bath and sitting room with futon couch, small refrigerator, electric teakettle with coffee filter, microwave. $125/night extra cot $35 Suggestions: Spend at least two full days here which means three nights. Arrive an hour before dark to have dinner at our local Lobster Shack at the water's edge, just down the road (small and eat at a picnic table on the dock), visit Acadia the first day and second day relax around your new coastal home: picnic and swim at the small local beach overlooking the mountains in Acadia, walk with another picnic spot on the rocks at the head of Morgan Bay, which is the Carter Nature Preserve, bike on the 'neck' two miles away (I have two bikes, not fancy), on a peninsula with a small dead end road with views of Acadia. You might want to have dinner, again at the Lobster Shack or if you prefer to take a drive, Stonington on Deer Isle on the Blue Hill Peninsula is a old Maine lobster village, make reservations at Aragosta with perhaps a show at the Opera House, or the Lookout on your drive back in Brooklin (Maine), or try a restaurant in Blue Hill brick over pizza, fancier Arborview, or Deep Water Brew Pub. MORE SUGGESTIONS Walk five minutes down the road to Morgan Bay and the Carter Nature Preserve, perfect for kayaking, swimming, or bird watching. In the other direction a five minute walk takes you to one of the prettiest views in Maine, the mountains of Acadia National Park. A short walk down the road from The Morgan House is the Morgan Bay Zendo, a sweet forest meditation center (URL HIDDEN) which has public meditation sittings on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. OTHER OPTIONS FOR ROOMS RENT A SECOND ROOM with old quilts keeping you cozy. or Charming, teeny cabin in backyard on the edge of a forest. Primitive and cozy. Full size bed. New insides. Small refrigerator, hot plate, electric teakettle and use of inside toilet. $55 Full size bed for one $80 for two. After you have settled in perhaps with a rest on your king size bed, you have many options for active relaxation: More Suggestions: BIKE - From The Surry House bike 15 minutes on country roads to a small sandy beach overlooking the mountains of Acadia National Park. This is also a lovely two hour walk roundtrip. LOBSTER SHACK - After enjoying the beach, bike 4 minutes to the local lobster shack and pick out a fresh lobster. While you wait, sit on the dock, breath the fresh ocean air. When your lobster is ready, you have your private dining room with a few tables on the dock for truly enjoying your Maine feast on the water while viewing the mountains of Acadia. This is the coast of Maine! LONGER BIKE RIDES - If you have energy for biking or walking on, continue for another 3 miles for more beautiful views on the 'neck', a one road on this peninsula or bike in the other direction to the village of Surry. KAYAK - On other days put in your kayak (or have one delivered for your use) just a few yards down the road for a sheltered bay adventure or kayak over to Acadia. Kayaking is shorter as the crow flies than driving. ART GALLERIES - Drive to art galleries, antique shops, Holbrook Island Sanctuary, or just meander on the small country roads, maybe visiting the Nearing Homestead, the well-known "back-to-the-landers" of the 70's and 80's. BY CAR - Drive a lovely 45 minutes through Ellsworth and back roads to Acadia National Park for mountain hiking, walks along the water's edge, biking on carriage trails, tea at the Jordon Pond House, or an early morning drive up Cadillac Mountain to be the first in the nation to see the sunrise. Look west from Caterpillar Hill to see the sunset at day's end. FERRY TO THE ISLANDS - you may want to take a ferry to one of the many islands in the area. DINNER - Take your picnic just down the road to the shore or dine in a one of the lovely restaurants in Blue Hill, perhaps Boatyard Grill in the local boatyard. PORCH - Relax on the backyard swing. A fire pit in the back yard waits for an evening fire. Watch the display of stars light up the evening sky. Here in Downeast Maine we have the darkest skies east of the Mississippi. Watch the Milky Way or the Big Dipper revolve around Polaris, the North Star. MOON GARDEN--If you time it right you'll be here to see the full moon rise over Cadillac Mountain and over the Moon Garden in front of the house. The Moon Garden is filled with white flowers brilliant in full moon light. MEDITATION CENTER - The lovely meditation center, Morgan Bay Zendo is a short walk down the road then down a wooded path. Join folks for Sunday morning sittings or Wednesday evenings, or come for a retreat and stay in the Surry House. You'll want to come back down home next year, or not leave at all!

Interaction with Guests

I am happy to offer suggestions. Perhaps send me an email letting me know if you have any requests. You have lots of privacy in your space.

The Neighborhood

The neighborhood is centered around Morgan Bay. Many of the homes were built in the 70s when people came from far and wide to study with a Zen teacher who was also a concert pianist. You can visit the sweet forest meditation center across the room, the Surry Arts at the Barn also across the road in the other direction, and the organic farm stand - across the road on Tuesday afternoons. All a five minute walk.

Getting Around

Walk to local wood trails, head of Morgan Bay, Surry Arts at the Barn, and meditation center. Bike to the small beach overlooking the Acadia Mountains, the Lobster Shack, or for a 10 mile or less bike ride on a deadend road, a narrow peninsula with many views of Acadia and Union Bay. Car is needed to go to Acadia. You can get to The Morgan House by public transportation. 10 am Concord Coach bus from South Station in Boston arriving in Bangor, Maine around 3pm (or direct non-stop from NYC), then a bus to Ellsworth very soon after arrival in Bangor, and a taxi to The Morgan House.

Millions of people are using Airbnb to sleep in strangers' homes, beds, and even couches. They have an amazing selection and you can't find their stuff anywhere else. There is a catch: you often need to contact several hosts to actually get a place to stay, so make sure you give yourself some lead time.
