Description

The Space

Cabin is located on Patten Bay with spectacular ocean view and rocky beach on one acre of private land. The porch faces the ocean side and the cabin is surrounded by private woods. Sleeps up to four with one double bed and two singles plus a loft double mattress. Fully equipped kitchen with refrigerator, electric stove, microwave oven, toaster oven and coffeemaker. Shower in bathroom. Small electric heating units. Free Wifi and landline for local calls. Private gravel and paved road to the water is steep. About 8 miles from Ellsworth and Blue Hill and 35 minutes by car from Mt. Desert Island. Caretaker is local and lives nearby. Rent by week from Saturday to Saturday.

Guest Access

The property is on Patten Bay and is one acre. It is relatively isolated and quiet with wooded areas surrounding the cabin and the bay only 75 feet from the building.

Interaction with Guests

I am generally available via email or cell. As I do not live in the area, the caretaker David Page lives nearby to respond to emergencies.

The Neighborhood

Surry is a small town relatively close to but away from the touristy areas. There is a nice beach further down Newbury Neck Road called the Carrying Place, and Perry's Lobster Shack and Pier is busy during lobster season. The local land trust has several beautiful walks on the Crossroads - one along Morgan Bay and the other inland with a view of a beaver dam. We are close to Blue Hill and Stonington on Deer Isle. Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park is about 40 minutes drive. Some great day trips are to Schoodic Point (part of Acadia National Park) with spectacular views of the ocean; and Baxter State Park with Mt. Katahdin, the highest peak in Maine. You can even make a day trip to Campobello Island (Canada), where FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt used to spend their summers.

Getting Around

The cabin is in a small town in rural Maine and so a vehicle is essential. Nearby airports are in Bangor and Bar Harbor, where car rentals are available.

Millions of people are using Airbnb to sleep in strangers' homes, beds, and even couches. They have an amazing selection and you can't find their stuff anywhere else. There is a catch: you often need to contact several hosts to actually get a place to stay, so make sure you give yourself some lead time.

Place's rules

Guests are expected to keep the cabin clean and in order. Remember that the cabin is in the woods, so guests should be careful to keep food in closed containers and food garbage should be placed in the covered garbage can. The telephone is for local calls only and 800 numbers, so guests can use telephone cards to make long distance calls. Cell phones generally work in this area. Free Wifi is available. Guests are expected to leave the cabin as clean as it was when they arrived. Dishes, pots and pans should be washed and returned to the cupboards. Bed sheets should be stripped from the bed. These linens and used towels should be piled together for the caretaker. There is no smoking or barbequing on the premises. Please be respectful of the next guests arriving. Enjoy!
