The Space

The Refuge is an old andean house remodeled to accommodate comfortably 6 persons. Two main rooms with a double bed and bunk bed. Private bathroom with hot water in each room. A fireplace and a kitchen fully equipped with gas range, hot water and microwave. Internal typical patio andino surrounded by a nice open corridor. External restroom and storage. Big mountains surrounding and 12.000 feet altitude means this is a real disconnected place. No radio-TV signal, no phones, just you, your guests and some friendly locals sharing more than 15.000 hectares of pristine tropical high mountain ecosystems.

Guest Access

This is a really amazing and remote place. For this reason, we include in this package the transportation of the visitors from the Merida city or other departure point to the Refuge by very secure 4X4 vehicles and skilled drivers. This measure is not because the trip is risky, it is just because it is hard to find.

Interaction with Guests

We manage the reservations from the US and coordinate with our team in Merida city for the logistics. We prefer to take care about our guest because this is an amazing site but out of the way site. This means we will always have somebody at our reach in case of any emergency, illness or special need.

The Neighborhood

Around the Refuge, we have 37.000 acres of national park with only 2 local and very nice families in the neighborhood. So, this is not a crowded place! Just enough to interact with very interesting mountaineers. The closest village is named La Toma and is 30 minutes down the unpaved road in 4X4 vehicle. There you can find all basic needs (food, supplies, medicines, etc.)

Getting Around

The Refuge is owned by the Fundation Programa Andes Tropicales, a Venezuelan NGO dedicated to local development, conservation and community based tourism. Revenues from rentals will be reinvested in the foundation operations.

Other Things to Note

This is a high mountain range. Guest will be in a good shape as the Refuge is at 12.000 feet high. Weather can be very variable from May to September. During the day, nice temperature for walk (15 degree C) but can drop close to freezing temperature during the night. Not recommended for people with cardiovascular problems, asthma and other respiratory diseases. Not recommended for small kids and people with health issues due to the altitude.

Millions of people are using Airbnb to sleep in strangers' homes, beds, and even couches. They have an amazing selection and you can't find their stuff anywhere else. There is a catch: you often need to contact several hosts to actually get a place to stay, so make sure you give yourself some lead time.
