Cripple Creek is abuzz with history, having once been the heart of Gold Rush land. Although the area used to be somewhat of a ghost town, nowadays tourism and legal gambling makes Cripple Creek a popular place to visit in Colorado.
In town, check out the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine Tour to drop 1,000 feet below ground and learn how the mines worked back in the day. After, take a tour of the Outlaw and Lawman Jail Museum and see how con men and robbers of the past had to live once caught by the sheriff. If you're still eager to learn more, explore on two wheels by renting a bike and venturing out on one of the trails through Cripple Creek's natural surroundings.
If you have the chance, try to get tickets for a show at the old Butte Theatre which dates to 1890 and boasts an impressive calendar of events. There are also numerous other museums, casinos and historic buildings to visit while in town.
Festivals take place in Cripple Creek year-round, such as the Cripple Creek Ice Festival in winter or the Fall Aspen Tours and Party in September, when the beautiful Aspen trees turn gold and red as the season changes.
