Best Time to Visit Emerald Island

The most popular time to visit Emerald Island is during the summer months. But fall and spring are also pleasant times of the year for a vacation.

A Local's Guide to Emerald Isle

The vacation resort of Emerald Isle is on Bogue Banks Island and forms part of the North Carolina Crystal Coast. Here is the perfect place for a family friendly vacation, as Emerald Isle has fishing, water sports and miles of beautiful shoreline.

Once owned by Henry Fort, Emerald Isle was planned to be a summer tourist attraction and ocean resort. The plans never came to be and his daughter inherited the area then sold it in 1951 to seven investors.

See & Do

A ferry service along the beaches began in 1960 and the in 1971 the Cameron Langston Bridge was opened which improved transport links from Cedar Point to the Emerald Isle. This bridge stretched over the Intracoastal Waterway and brought more investment, and people, to the isle. Nowadays, vacationers flock to this area to fish and spot marine life. There is also a disc golf course at Emerald Isle Woods Park and a host of birdlife can be spotted as part of the North Caroline Birding Trail. Sea turtles come to the island every year to nest and these creatures are protected by federal law.

While taking a vacation in Emerald Isle, visitors can take a trip to the nearby Cape Lookout National Seashore. This is a preserved section of the Southern Outer Banks which stretches from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet. It's a great day out and families can enjoy fishing, camping and birding as well as learning about the Cape Lookout Light Station. From the top of the lighthouse, brave climbers can enjoy wide-reaching views and watch sailboats on the water.

Nature & Wildlife

To get up-close to birdlife, kayakers can paddle along some of the 112 miles of shoreline.

Take a trip to Pine Knoll Shores for some more unspoilt coastline and the North Carolina Aquarium. There are sand tiger sharks, a 6ft green moray eel and other sharks and large fish. The biggest exhibit at the aquarium is the 306,000 gallon Living Shipwrek. There is a replica German submarine which was sunk off the North Carolina coast which has been made into an incredible tank and the tidal touch pool allows children to hold and touch some aquatic animals. Visitors should also check out Nimbus, the rare white sand turtle who was found on Pine Knoll shores.

Stop off at the village of Salter Path in the middle of Bogue Banks and see some of the families who were original residents of the area. Indian Beach is also worth a visit to sample some of the incredible, fresh fish caught the same day.

Once a year the EmeraldFest Concert Series runs a program of free events for families and friends. The summer season allows visitors to bring a picnic and enjoy the outdoor performances.

For cyclists, there is an 11-mile bike path which runs from the Indian Beach town limits all the way to Bogue Inlet. The cycle path goes along Coast Guard Road and Loon Drive. This is a great way for visitors to see the island at a slower pace and passes all the main destinations.

There are also a lot of stores to pick up souvenirs, homewares or clothing in Emerald Isle.

There are lots of beach rentals in Emerald Isle which to suit a single family, large groups of friends or extended families. A beach house is a perfect place to stay for a beach vacation and choosing one with a covered porch means it can be enjoyed even if the weather changes. Properties managed by an agent or real estate offer can take the pressure off and allow visitors to relax and enjoy the beautiful beach.
