A Local's Guide to Folly Beach

Families wanting to enjoy beautiful scenery on a coastal trip should look at vacation rentals in Folly Beach. The resort is on Folly Island, South Carolina, and has lots of attractions for families, friends and couples. South of Charleston, the city has historic sights, parks, a pier and plenty of wildlife.

Enjoy the “Edge of America” and watch the sun set over the beach from a house rental in the heart of this charming town.

Families visiting Folly Island have to see the Morris Island Lighthouse which was built in 1876. This lighthouse, which once warned sailors of danger, has been decommissioned so the light no longer shines but the structure stays to remind visitors of the history of this coastal resort. The lighthouse sits just a few hundred feet from Charleston Harbor and is preserved by the State of South Carolina as a tourist attraction and a barrier is being built to protect it further.

See & Do

There are plenty of attractions to enjoy in Folly Beach within walking distance. The Folly Beach County Park has plenty of places to take a picnic as well as a pelican rookery called Skimmer Flats. The park is between the Atlantic Ocean and Folly River, it has lifeguards on duty through the peak season months as the area is popular with swimmers. Dogs are welcome on the beach between September 30 and May 30 but only on a leash.

Center Street has souvenir and boutique stores and the Folly River flows to the north of Folly Beach itself.

Beach Activities

Surfers have a great place to ride the waves in Folly Beach. Known as the best place in South Carolina to surf, the Washout or Folly Beach Pier are the spots most visitors head to. There are cameras dotted along the beaches monitoring the waves and conditions so surfers can log in and check the waves before heading out for a day of surfing. For travelers who want to learn, there are surf schools available that will take wannabe board riders out for a day or half a day to learn the basics.

Anglers can also enjoy some of the best fishing in South Carolina at Folly Beach. The Fishing Pier extends out 1,000 ft into the water and as well as soaking up some incredible ocean views, fishermen can catch a wide variety of aquatic animals. There’s a tackle shop at the pier so there’s no need to transport a lot of bait and tackle down there. For deep sea fishing fans, several companies run charters out for the day to find Marlin, Tuna and Sailfish.

Back on land, a game of golf is the perfect way to relax. There are several public courses which range from expert to beginner in and around Folly Beach.

The closest is The Ocean Course which has hosted the PGA Championships. It is badly affected by wind which means there are two courses – one for an easterly wind and one for a westerly wind.

There are plenty of rentals in Folly Beach from oceanfront villas, to apartments and condos with easy access to the beach and main tourist areas.

With the weather in summer reaching 85 degrees F, it is worth looking for a rental that includes air conditioning!
