The town got its name from a lumber businessman, Anthony Judson Hayward who built a sawmill, which later became the center of the fast growing town. Equipment is available to rent for those who didn't bring their own. Additionally, Hayward and Cable is also used as a challenging hiking trail, both during summer and winter. On rare occassions people say the Northern Lights are visible here.
