Weirdly enough, one of the best things to do in Jefferson City is to visit the Missouri State Penitentiary. In the early 20th century it was the largest penitentiary in the country, but also deemed the “bloodiest 47 acres in America” due to countless deaths and injuries. Today the jail has been converted into a museum which you can tour. They even host ghost tours and overnight stays if you’re feeling particularly adventurous.
It’d be a crime to visit Jefferson City and not go to the capital. Policy wonks and architecture buffs alike will find an afternoon of enjoyment here at the capital building. The primary buildig is modeled after the nation’s capital in D.C., which makes it great for photos.
