In the early 20th century it was the largest penitentiary in the country, but also deemed the “bloodiest 47 acres in America” due to countless deaths and injuries. Outdoor enthusiasts should make their way over to the Runge Nature Center which holds tons of exhibits displaying Missouri’s natural and ecological wealth. There’s also a network of trails that have info boards along the way, serving as a self-guide experience.
