Manistee, Michigan is a city on the banks of Lake Michigan. Its lakeside location makes it an incredibly picturesque city where it's easy to flit between nature and cosmopolitan life.
The Manistee river walk extends for almost two miles and leads travelers on a stunning walk around the city. Starting in the downtown district, it crosses over quaint wooden bridges, past historical sites, cute coffee shops and out along the river front. This is a great way to get acquainted with the city and enjoy the views alongside the river that runs through the city and out towards Lake Michigan.
For a little local R&R, lay down a beach towel and relax on the lakeside beach at the Orchard Beach State Park. First Street Beach and Fifth Avenue Beach are alternative choices that are not crowded or spoiled by commercial developments.
Downtown Manistee is the best place to stay here. It places you in the heart of the action, close to the lake and right by many excellent food and entertainment options.
The summer months are the best time to visit Manistee as the weather is warmer at this time -- often venturing into the eighties and making conditions perfect for walking and enjoying the beaches.
