Playa del Carmen Travel Guide

Playa del Carmen is a beach town along the southeast coast of Mexico. With crystal clear waters along golden beaches lined with palm trees, Playa del Carmen is a traveler's paradise to escape busy city life and relax in the sunshine.

Things to Do in Playa del Carmen

Get a taste of Mayan culture by exploring the ancients ruins of Tulum. Sitting on top of a cliff edge on the Quintana Roo coast, take a guided tour to learn about the rich history of the ceremonial site. Afterward, dive (quite literally) into Xel-Ha, where you can swim with tropical fish, zip line over the turquoise water or snorkel in the cove. Tulum-Xel-Ha is a fantastic day out for families and aquatic explorers, and most package tours include traditional Mexican breakfast and lunch. Discover even more history by heading to the archeological site Chichzen Itza, roughly translating as 'at the mouth of the well'. Make sure you check out the Kukulkan Pyramid. The large stone-stepped pyramid is truly a spectacle to see at night when the lights show off its intricate geometry.

Best Time to Visit Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is popular with travelers druing two travel periods throughout the year. The first is from December through to April, where temperatures remain in the 80s. The second is over July and August, when temperatures reach 90.

A Local's Guide to Playa del Carmen

There are huge range of rental properties in the town of Playa de Carmen and the surrounding area, many of which have stunning ocean views. Step out the front door of your vacation home and explore what this vibrant city has to offer.

There is nowhere better to soak up the Mexican sun than on the many beaches of Playa del Carmen, located on the Yucatan Peninsula. Take in the stunning blue waters either on land or by boat. Only the occasional palm tree breaks up the silky white sand, and all anyone has to worry about is picking out the perfect spot and spend the day enjoying the tropical atmosphere, cocktail in-hand.

Playa Del Carmen is a quintessential beach vacation destination. The most popular sand beaches are located in the north, and include all the necessary amenities for a full day. Well stocked with sun beds, umbrellas and beachfront bars, anyone could spend hours here. Snorkeling and scuba diving just off the coastline are also popular activities for those needing a break from sunbathing. The waters tend to be crystal clear, which is perfect for spotting some of the many marine animals and rainbow reefs that live in the Caribbean Sea just below the waves. By getting a vacation rental near the beach, renters can be rest assured that they will always be just a short walk away from the pristine waters.

To unwind on the ocean, charter a catamaran and really explore what Playa del Carmen Mexico has to offer. Also obviously many of Playa del Carmen’s beaches are a must visit. Be sure to visit the beautiful Point Esmeralda. One fun tourist attraction is Fundadores Park. Built right along the sand this park is easily spotted as it is home to towering sculptures. The park also has a playground for kids and also often hosts traditional Mayan dancers.

Although many of the activities in Playa del Carmen revolve around the sea, there is still plenty to do inland. Visitors to Playa del Carmen can delve into the area’s lush surroundings for tours in the nearby reserves, which are rich in wildlife. On these adventures folks are likely to spot rare birds, dolphins, and even crocodiles. Explorers can also head deep into the mangroves for a truly unique nature experience, all the while keeping a close eye out for the majestic jaguar. Another great way to spot dolphins is via an organized excursion on a boat.

Get a taste of Mayan culture by exploring the nearby ancient ruins of Tulum that sit precariously atop of the rocks above the waves, not to be missed on any Playa del Carmen vacation. You can take a guided tour along the Quintana Roo coast and learn about the rich history of this ceremonial site. Anyone that is eager to learn more can head to the archaeological site of Chichen Itza and see the legendary Kukulkan Pyramid, which is also sometimes called El Castillo. Chichen Itza itself refers to a large city built by the Mayan people, which existed in pre-Columbian times, of which the towering Kukulkan Pyramid was the cultural and religious focal point. However, El Castillo is not the only standing archaeological wonder still standing in Chichen Itza, there are many other buildings here worth visiting. El Caracol is thought to be some kind of astronomical observatory based on its rounded rotunda and the Mayan’s knowledge of the stars. The Osario and the Temple of Xtoloc are other step pyramids. The Great Ball Court was a Mayan sporting arena, at the highest level of this ball game it is believed that matches were played in conjunction with religious ceremonies and because of that some players ended up being human sacrifices. The Sacred Cenote is a cenote, or a natural sinkhole filled with water, these are very common in this part of the world. This particular cenote was used as a place for sacrifices during drought. This theory is backed by the discovery of things like gold, jade, pottery, cloth, rubber, skeletal remains, and other valuable materials that have been pulled up from the bottom of the cenote by archaeologists. Another step temple is the Temple of the Warriors, which is surrounded by vertical columns that depict Mayan soldiers. Some of the columns extending from here would have supported a great roof; this portion of the city is now called Group of a Thousand Columns. Chichen Itza is Mexico’s second most visited archaeological site, welcoming somewhere between two and a half to three million people.

Shopaholics are truly in the right place, as Playa del Carmen is often described as one of the retail capitals of the Riviera Maya. For a truly unique souvenir, spend hours popping in and out of the many local shops that house handicrafts and local specialties. The best place in town for shopping is 5th Avenue, known locally as Quinta Avenida, located in the heart of Playa del Carmen. Not only can shoppers pick up some great goods, but they can also sample some tasty tequilas or other local cuisine at the same time (just don’t drink too much or you might ending buying more than you need!). After the shopping quota has been filled, the Avenue is also famous for its nightlife scene, with many bars featuring live music every night. Those wanting to have a good time at some of the Yucatan Peninsula’s famous parties can get that done at Playa del Carmen as well. Although Cancun has the “spring break” reputation, Playa is a good time too. Those wanting to party but also get a responsible night’s sleep can head to Mamita’s Beach Club, a beach front business that monopolizes the shoreline in front of their establishment but also welcomes guests inside to enjoy music, the pool, and fun tropical cocktails.

Cabins in Playa del Carmen

On the sun-soaked Caribbean coast is Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Although still a popular holiday destination to rent condos, it is considerably more low key than its bustling neighbor Cancun, which is farther up the coast of Quintana Roo.

Many visitors come to town to enjoy the white sand beaches and ocean views, while others fuel their adrenaline with the range of water sports offered. Spend days taking a boat out on the blue waters to the coral that surrounds the island of Cozumel, and dance the nights away in North Playa del Carmen, home to unbeatable beach clubs. In the heart of Playa is 5th Avenue, home to boutiques, hotels, restaurants, vacation rentals, art galleries, and street performers.

In town and the surrounding area of the Riviera Maya are many Playa del Carmen condo rentals and real estate areas to suit every taste and budget. Rental properties are located both in the center of town and closer to the beach, and cater to a range of party sizes. Some of our favorite resorts include Secrets Maroma Beach, Mahekal Beach Resort, Viceroy Riviera Maya, and The Reef Coco Beach.

It may not be surprising that in a tropical paradise like Playa del Carmen traditional cabins are somewhat hard to come by. But with that said it is possible to find a type of hybrid cabin accommodation, something between a cabin and a bungalow. These family friendly vacation rental properties are usually found outside of Playa del Carmen along the less trafficked beaches like Xcalacoco. Many are built of finished wood and have beaches to the front and sometimes even a pool in the backyard of these “cabins”.

Although the cabin selection might be limited, travelers to Playa del Carmen will not be disappointed by the numerous unique vacation rental options available; everyone can find the perfect accommodation for their budget or lack there of. From exclusive condo rentals, to all-inclusive resorts, yoga retreats, or even cool glamping sites a vacation in Playa del Carmen is sure to be accompanied by a great place to stay.
