Rome Travel Guide

For history buffs and architecture enthusiasts, Rome may as well be heaven. Famous for its wealth of historical landmarks and jaw-dropping architecture, a trip to the heart of what was once one of mankind's greatest empires is a trip to another world. Here at AllTheRooms, we have more than 10,000 accommodations options in the area ranging from hotels to Airbnbs to Couchsurfing hosts and more. The bulk of our accommodations are concentrated in the heart of the city and the immediate surrounding area, but we also have villas out in the hills close to nature reserves for those not up for the crowds.

Best Time to Visit Rome

Suffocating tourist traffic flocks to the region in the summer months so we recommend fall and spring trips to catch the best combination of decent weather and manageable crowds. Going away from the mainstream hotel options in favor of private Airbnbs and boutique hotels is another way to ensure that your trip is relaxing.

Things to Do in Rome

As for activities, the list is almost endless. Head to the Colosseum to see where tens of thousands of spectators would watch gladiators battled to the death 1500 years ago. Marvel at the perfection of the Pantheon and see where Raphael and numerous Italian kings were buried. Explore the Roman Forum and see the bones of one of the most important sections of Rome. From government houses to tombs, the forum is simply mind-blowing. To finish it off, grab food at one of the excellent restaurants that line the city streets.

A Local's Guide to Rome

For adventure seekers, sun worshipers, history buffs, architecture enthusiasts, and the ultimate foodies, the ancient city of Rome really has it all. The city is famous for its wealth of landmarks in its historic center, including the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Vatican City, the Pantheon, and the Colosseum to name just a few. A trip into the heart of what was once one of humankind’s greatest empires is undoubtedly unforgettable.

In such a big and busy city, there are literally thousands of Rome vacation rental options to choose from, ranging from the most upscale hotels in the historical center of Rome to more budget-friendly options such as Airbnbs and couchsurfing. The majority of vacation rentals are near the city center, but you should be able to find a vacation rental no matter where you want to stay in the Eternal City. There are even some rentals in Rome out in the surrounding hills, closer to nature but still within easy reach of the city, making for an ideal Rome holiday.

It's possible to spend weeks in Rome and still not fully explore all the secrets that the city has. The Colosseum truly is a sight to behold, and is where tens of thousands of spectators would watch gladiators battle to the death over 1,500 years ago. A Rome vacation would not be complete without seeing the world famous Vatican City, an independent city state enclaved within Rome. It is the smallest state in Europe, both in population and expanse, headed by the Pope. The palace is open to the public and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Within the Vatican are numerous attractions such as St.Peter’s Square, St. Pater’s Basilica, and the Vatican Museums, which is where the Sistine Chapel is located.

The Roman Forum used to be the hub of political and social activity for Roman citizens. As well as a number of temples in the Forum, other points of interest include Via Sacra, Arch of Titus, Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine and the Curia.

Villa Borghese is a tranquil park in Rome, and is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, complete with features like a lake, temples, fountains and statues. The real attraction here is the Borghese Gallery -- world-renowned for its important works by Canova and Bernini.

After a long day of sightseeing, one of the best evening activities is to wine, dine and people-watch in one of the city’s many squares, known locally as 'Piazzas'. Also known for their spectacular fountains and buzzing atmosphere, the squares are the center of daily life. Piazza Navona has not one, but three classic fountains, and is one of the most striking squares in Rome, while Piazza Del Popolo literally translates as the people’s square and draws visitors to the huge obelisk that sits in the center.

Rome is a great destination to visit all year round. The weather is the hottest in the summer months, and this is when the majority of visitors arrive. A trip in spring or fall is arguably the best time to visit however, as the weather is still likely to be warm but the crowds are much more manageable. If you do want to travel in summer, choose a location just outside of town to avoid the crowds. If you want to stay in Rome, explore some of the boutique lodging for a more unique hotel room.
