Springfield Travel Guide

Springfield is the state capital of the state of Illinois. European Americans first settled this area, which is now known as the Springfield Metropolitan Area, in the early 1800s, and a few years later it became the home of Abraham Lincoln. This beautiful, centrally located city is a popular destination for a vacation because it is a good mixture of sight seeing, landmarks, cultural centers, and outdoor activities. The outdoor activities, as well as their successful agriculture business, is thanks in large part to Springfield’s proximity to Sangamon River and Lake Springfield. The historical town in the heart of Illinois is an excellent vacation option for families, friends, and couples.

Things to Do in Springfield

Springfield has over 20 museums and galleries so culture and art lovers should have plenty to do. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum combines authentic belongings of the 16th president along with holographic movies, costumes, and decorated in a way that feels as though visitors have stepped back in time. For another taste of Honest Abe’s life, check out the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, which gives visitors a feel for how the president might have lived during his time in Springfield. It is also a free attraction so don’t miss it. The Illinois State Museum is a good place to learn about the history of the state, as well as about how and when was it settled. There are many interactive exhibits too so children can have fun as well. There are also a number of museums focusing on military and Air Force history.

Illinois’s state capital is one of the more impressive buildings used as a state capital. Free tours, given daily, point out some of the fine architecture and history on display in this governmental hub.

The city also features over two-dozen historical buildings and mansions, many of which are close by Springfield’s beautiful parks. Washington Park is our favorite as it has long walking loop trails, lots of bird watching opportunities, and nicely kept gardens.

Best Places to Stay in Springfield

Lincoln Park is the most exciting part of town as there are lots of restaurants, cafes, night clubs, museums, and parks. While this part of the city is laid back, Springfield overall is a great place to have a relaxing visit.

The best time to visit Springfield is end of August for ideal weather for outdoor activities or to spend some time in the museums to cool down.
