Whitmore Lake is one of the most popular lakes in Southeast Michigan, with hundreds of acres of water ideal for fishing, boating and all manner of water sports. Beyond the lake the natural scenery is beautiful with farmland and woodlands, creating a distinct rural feel in this small community, despite being so close to the city.
Most of the fun in Whitmore is based in and around the lake. You can rent row boats and paddle boats and explore the lake or choose to kayak or canoe. Aside from Whitmore Lake there are actually two smaller lakes where you can also have fun boating around. The lakes are also home to plenty of fish like walleye, smallmouth and largemouth bass, pike and catfish and more. Keen fishermen are free to try their luck, you can also have a go at ice fishing in winter.
Independence Lake County Park has a lovely sandy beach and grassy area for recreation. Head to Independence Lake County Park for scenic hiking trails that meander through prairie lands,woodland and wetland. It's the perfect place to watch for bird and plant life. At the wetlands you can climb the observation tower and watch for rare wildlife there.
There is also a charming downtown here with plenty of shops and an historic library.
Visit in summer for the best weather by the lake, or in winter you can enjoy ice fishing and a different landscape that is just as beautiful.
