A Local's Guide to Wildwood

It is impossible to be bored in the New Jersey town of Wildwoods. With five miles of gorgeous free beaches and 38 blocks of boardwalk fun, Wildwoods is a family-friendly town just waiting to be explored.

The beach and the boardwalk are the main attractions here. Home to the widest beach in the state, there is always somewhere to lay down your towel and enjoy the sun in the summer months. If you are not up to the long walk down to the water, hire a beach taxi to transport you across the sand -- a novel experience! Alternatively, head to North Wildwood, where the beach starts to get a little narrower.

A visit to Wildwoods New Jersey wouldn't be complete without spending a Friday night on the boardwalk, a tw-mile stretch from Crease Avenue all the way to 15th Avenue. In the summer, the area is alive with activity, with children and adults alike having a fantastic time on the roller coasters and other rides, the bright tourist tram trundling past, and the smell of candyfloss in the air. The walk is full of shops, restaurants, arcades, amusement parks, and even golf courses. Many people book a summer vacation here for this reason alone, and end up coming back year after year to relive fond memories.

Along the coast, three large piers stretch from the boardwalk into the water, each offering some great ocean views. The piers are home to rides of all sizes, and some even have a water park or a giant Ferris wheel boasting an ariel view of the Atlantic Ocean and the whole of the town. With all these attractions, Wildwood New Jersey is a great location for a family trip.

If you get bored sitting on the beach, there are endless activities to help entertain you. Some of these include stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking and more. One of the most popular things to do is to take a bike out for the day and explore the island's many miles of dedicated cycle path -- it's even possible to peddle the entire length of the island before retiring back to your vacation home for a well-earned drink.

Of course, the bay offers more than just some great views and a place to dip your feet. Get out onto the water on a wildlife-spotting trip, go fishing or even have an adventure on a pirate ship. Some companies offer whale and dolphin watching excursions for a magical experience out on the waves.

Depending on when you are looking for Wildwood vacation rentals, there is likely to be a special event or activity taking place in town, especially in summer. The Kites Festival is always very exciting, taking place in June, or alternatively visitors in fall can enjoy the Seafood and Music Festival, and the Fabulous 50s and Beyond Festival. This celebration is not the only blast-from-the-past the city holds.

Setting this Jersey Shore community apart from others is their collection of buildings from the 1950s and 1960s. Picture bright colors and neon signs, and you have many of the buildings in Wildwood. You can learn more about this era in the Doo Wop Experience, located in a former 1960s diner. The museum, although small, features a large collection of items dating back to the Doo Wop era. If that wasn't enough, guests can even stay at a number of retro style motels just blocks from the beach.

Although hotels and motels are a great accommodation options, many visitors prefer to explore some of the beautifully decorated beach houses and vacation rentals. These rentals are great for families and larger groups thanks to the well-stocked kitchens and shared living spaces, many of which are just a block to the beach and boardwalk.
