Digital Nomad Stories: Vincenzo

Hi Vincenzo! Tell us about yourself. Where are you from, where are you now, where are you going next? What do you do, why do you do it?

New York, born and raised. I call Medellin Colombia and Brazil my bases. I have been between the two places for 6 months for the last few years because as a nomad, its important to have a good base and travel from there, in my opinion. I will head to Europe this summer and set up shop in Italy and Portugal for a few months. I am an Expat CPA so I do taxes for digital nomads; which is nice as I get to meet a lot of people who become both friends and clients and get to take advantage of the tax rules for being nomadic.

How did you become a digital nomad?

Like everyone else, I quit my day job. I was working for a Big Four accounting firm in NY and also in Private equity. The year was 2010, the economy was horrible and NY was in the pits. I was working but all my friends had lost their jobs, so NY was losing its luster. Then one day I realized that I have nothing to lose, my relationship was over, my lease was up and my job was easy to toss aside. I had just gone to Buenos Aires 6 months prior and fell in love with the city. It reminded me of a latin version of Italy. I always wanted to learn Spanish and I had a solid group a friends there.

When my buddy said there was a room opening in up his apartment, I took it as a sign. For me it was a no-brainer. I had nothing to lose, so I decided to go there and see what happens. Worst case scenario, I go back to my standard life in NY and get another job. I took the plunge and never looked back.

What are your 3 essentials for every trip, besides your phone and laptop?

Sunscreen, an open mind, and my friends to connect with locals. Honestly, I am pretty minimalist when it comes to things that I need. However, I do take my soccer cleats everywhere.

What’s the first adventure that comes on your mind from your DN career?

Going to Oktoberfest in Argentina.

What’s your daily routine as a digital nomad?

I usually incorporate some physical activity such as soccer, gym, tennis into my daily routine. I generally work in the morning, explore the city or play some sport in the afternoon, and then eat out and walk around at night.

How do you balance your time between work and play?

My business is seasonal; I like it that way. I am busy and stay put from Feb-June, Sept-Oct, and then the rest of the year I can travel and work on a flexible schedule.

What are 3 pieces of advice you’d give to people wanting to transition to the digital nomad lifestyle?

1. Be open to meeting new people.

2. Learn a language, commit to one and really put the work into learning it.

3.  Take a plunge, don’t think about it just do it.
