It’s no wonder we’re so fascinated with Nordic countries: Scandinavians are known to be the happiest people in the world. Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Finland and Sweden have continuously ranked as the world’s best countries for quality of life, health and happiness. We’ve done some research to uncover their secrets. Here’s how to embrace your inner Viking and live like a Scandinavian without having to set foot on a plane.
Eat Like A Viking
Scandinavians embrace local produce and have a diet rich in products such as freshly smoked salmon, Icelandic cod and wild vegetables. With such a healthy diet that is rich in omega-3 and nutrients, it’s easy to see why Scandinavian countries have a healthy and happy population. Embrace the local produce in your area and get cooking.
Why not party like a scandalous Scandinavian at the yearly Norsk Hostfest Festival. The festival, which takes place on September 27-30, 2017, is held at N.D. State Fair Center in Minot, North Dakota. Norsk Hostfest is a festival dedicated entirely to Scandinavian culture. There will be tons of great food stalls where you can sample the Nordic cuisine, beautiful handcrafted Scandinavian merchandise, strong beers and even trolls and Vikings on stilts.
Scandinavians are known for their great work-life balance. In the Nordic countries, many companies have strict rules about overtime and workers are encouraged to leave by 5 pm. There’s a well-developed tradition of short, frequent coffee breaks (called Fikas), which are believed to increase productivity. In Scandinavian culture, coffee is king and it’s usually paired with a danish pastry or slice of cake as an afternoon snack. In the busy lives that we lead today, it’s important to take a step back and give your mind time to rest. Make sure you take some time to find the right balance for you.
It’s true, those living in Nordic countries are more in tune with nature. Scandinavians prefer to spend their time outside taking walks, hiking or swimming, as oppsed to on their Instagram feeds. So, put down your phone and go to get some fresh air!
Hit The Sauna
Saunas are a big part of the Scandinavian culture: it’s where they go to catch-up, gossip and unwind. Whether it’s a log cabin in the middle of the woods, or just your local gym, spending time in a sauna is incredibly good for your health as it helps the body sweat out all of the bad toxins that build up over time.
