October means some of the best plans of the year – pumpkin picking, haunted houses, corn mazes, and the Suwannee Hulaween Music Festival, which takes place Oct. 27-29 in Live Oak, Florida. This family-friendly festival is back for its 5th year, and each year the festival has gained more fame and drawn in bigger audiences than the year before. With a stellar lineup, ghoulish decorations, and an incredible atmosphere, this is the spooky event of the season. If you’re looking for new Halloween plans and aren’t sure if this festival is calling you, check out our list of reasons to head to Hulaween 2017.
You could go to your friend of a friend’s house party and listen to top 40 hits through a fading speaker, or you could hear some of the top names in rock, electronic, and funk music live at the premier Halloween-themed festival in the southeast. Bluegrass/rock group The String Cheese Incident will be headlining the festival with hit artists Portugal. the Man, Bassnectar, Ween, Griz, RL Grime, The Polish Ambassador, Run the Jewels, The Disco Biscuits, Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats, and many more playing during the three-day festival. The music is a perfect mix of experienced performers, energy-filled sets, and calming local groups. Didn’t see your fave here? Check out the full list.
Your options are a crowded party held inside, a haunted house where you can’t stop to rest without an unwelcome visitor, or an outdoor music festival held on an 800-acre waterfront park. Sounds like an easy call to us. Hulaween takes place at the beautiful Spirit of Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Fl, a waterfront park and campground in the enchanting Spanish moss woods of northern Florida. The space holds music events all year round, meaning they know how to host a good party. When not home to a top-notch music event, Spirit of Suwannee Music Park is a space for families to take a swim in the river, camp out, or go for a picnic.
During the festival, the space transforms into “Spirit Lake”, a hauntingly magical Halloween spot featuring performance art, art installations including sculptures surrounding the lake, and a spectacular light show. Sit back after a full day of music to watch lights morph into skeletons and monsters leaping across the water in front of you.
If you want something else to do during the festival, check out some of the other activities taking place in the park. Take a dance class and dance the festival away. Relax with a yoga class, or with a flow class (a modified form of yoga), or a meditation class. Check out the silent disco happening at “Spirit Lake” to get in a little more dancing. Of course, you can always swim or canoe in the river, hang out on one of Spirit of Suwannee Music Park’s “mini beaches” by the water, bike on the trails, visit the Craft Room to find that perfect handcrafted gift, or head to the bird sanctuary.
2017 Hulaween is all about taking care of our planet. Head to the “Recycle Rewards Tent” where Hulaween’s Green Team is hosting a green carnival, complete with games and prizes and the chance for you to learn more about living the sustainable life. Recycling bins will be positioned throughout the park for you to dispose of your plastics, aluminum, glass, paper, and cardboard. Food waste and certain compostable materials will be composted.
A normal festival already means plenty of strange costumes, but add Halloween to the equation and you get even more extravagant costumes and over-the-top creations. Don’t think just that because you’re going to a music festival means you can’t celebrate Halloween. Hulaween highly encourages attendees to come in their best costumes.
If you’re looking for a way to include service in your Halloween plans, then you need to head to Hulaween. The festival and The Suwannee Music Foundation will be working with Conscious Alliance this year to host a food drive for the Love Inc. Food Bank in Live Oak, FL.
Fall is for cold weather, hot cider, and falling leaves, right? Not at Hulaween. Northern Florida at this time of the year is hot during the day, with temperatures typically in the 70’s or 80’s. If you still want that autumn vibe, stick around at night, when temperatures normally drop into the 60’s. If you’re from somewhere colder looking for a different Halloween plan and a break from the cold, then Hulaween is definitely for you.
Northern Florida Gems
