Our studio is a good value in desirable Harpswell and our location is excellent (as noted by many of our guests) for getting out and exploring the area and beyond. Excellent gateway location! No added cleaning fee! Pet free space! Reservations for summer stays happening now! Don't forget that summer is just around the corner when it comes to booking a place! We fill up every summer. Please note that minimal stays in the summer may vary. You'll want some time to relax and explore the area, so a three night minimum stay might be worth considering. Our separate property across the road offers tidal waterfront access with a sitting area for taking in the view and summer swimming for the more adventurous. Super soft cotton sheets and a very comfortable queen bed. If you reserve with us, upon your arrival we promise to give you all the local insider tips to make your stay even more enjoyable. Please read our description and house rules carefully in their entirety and let us know if you have any questions. There is a lot here, so you may want to print out the information. This information is best viewed on a desktop or notebook computer.
Many of our photos are Airbnb Verified. Our 488 square foot (45 square meters) studio on one level (slight step up between rooms) with private entrance, bedroom area, efficiency kitchenette (see details below) and private shower bath is new, bright, airy (lots of windows and high ceilings), well-insulated and very inviting! The decor is comfortable and eclectic rather than contemporary. Lovely views of the water from our property! You have your own personal sun space with gas grill, table and chairs outside. Check out our little sitting space across the road - a spectacular view and a tidal "swimming hole". All use of this area is at your own risk. Water shoes are recommended.
Many of our recent Airbnb guests are scoping out the area for real estate. It's becoming a hot market around here. This would be a great place to "hang your hat" while you check out properties. We personally know several local realtors. We want you to be happy, so please feel free to request anything that might make your stay more enjoyable. Delicious, chemical free water from our well for drinking and showering. Coffee, tea, coffee filters, cream and basic seasonings provided.
Please note that we don't have a full kitchen (best described as an efficiency kitchenette - no stove/range), but we have many very functional small appliances and a kitchen sink, so you can get by fairly well with the cookware and appliances provided. The kitchenette area features a refrigerator, separate upright freezer, kitchen sink, microwave (in bedroom area), countertop convection oven (with toaster feature), coffee maker, single serve hot water dispenser, single state of the art glass induction cooktop (works great), heats up quickly, requires pans that we provide), electric skillet, slow cooker, pots and pans, cooking utensils and silverware. Please note that you can't use all of the high wattage appliances at one time, but you can now use the cooktop and the convection toaster oven at the same time. We ask for our guests to stick with light cooking rather than deep fat frying or other strong odor cooking methods. For the sake of our subsequent guests, we prefer no cooking of lobster inside the suite. You can order lobsters cooked to order for eat in or take out about 1 minute up the road at Gurnet Trading.
The studio has a queen bed in the bedroom area and a pullout queen size couch in the living room. Both parts of the large room have cathedral ceilings and ceiling fans. The living area has rough-hewn beams that are original to the house. There are privacy drapes separating the sleeping from the living space.
The living room area has two skylights, a 42 in HDTV with super expanded cable including movie channels such as HBO, Starz and Cinemax. We also provide Netflix and a dvd player (there are some dvds in the suite and many other dvds readily available -just ask). RedBox is at several locations close by. We offer wifi and an ethernet "hard wire" adapter for NetFlix or for connecting a laptop. The bedroom area has an air conditioner window unit.
Realistically our studio is most ideal for a couple, however a family with one teenager or a small child or three (friends or family) adults should be comfortable. Please note that our studio is NOT child proofed. The apartment adjoins our home and is separated by a wall. The private entrance and the bedroom part of the studio are at the very back of our house. Like any homeowners with a private well and septic system, we ask that you be mindful of water usage. That said, we have continuous hot water, so you will never run out of hot water and the water pressure is great for taking showers! Chlorine free!
Two supermarkets are just up the road (7 minute drive - Shaw's or Walmart), so you can easily get provisions for your stay. Zach's store (2 minute drive) has an excellent selection of wine, beer, liquor, pizza and some groceries. If you want a big breakfast, we will be happy to recommend one of the local breakfast spots.
Our schedules may take us away from our home at times, so we will leave instructions for entering the studio and be available by cellphone if you have any questions or concerns. If you need to use the pullout couch, please let us know in advance and we will get it ready for you.
Please note as previously stated that we are on a busy main road, but the studio is at the back of our house away from the road, so there is very little road noise. Our house sits on a two acre piece of property in an extremely convenient location for heading out on adventures - in this case, living on a main road is a perk. We are less than 20 minutes from several small beaches and about 30 minutes from two state park beaches. We will gladly provide coolers, cool packs, beach towels and a beach sheet. If you have kayaks or bicycles, bring them along! There are many public boat launches in the area and some good areas for bicycling as well, particularly the nearby former Navy base. There are also kayak rentals and arranged kayak tours available as well as sailboat, schooner, ferry and charter boat tours. (seasonal) We're happy to offer suggestions! Guest Access Guests have access via their own entrance to a private attached studio apartment with sun deck, small propane gas grill and gravel parking area. Please park in the gravel area in front of the entrance of the studio (near the fish sign) during your stay. Please let us know in advance if you plan on bringing more than one vehicle so that we can plan accordingly.
Feel free to walk anywhere outdoors on our property including across the road to our little sitting space and tidal waterfront property.
We have on hand pretty much everything you might need. If you are interested in a lobster dinner, you can order fresh cooked lobster and tasty seafood just up the road over the bridge at our closest seafood place - Gurnet Trading Company (BYOB or buy beer and wine there and across the street at Zach's), rustic waterview outdoor and small indoor seating area, eat in or take out.
IMPORTANT: For liability reasons, please note that we do not provide canoes, kayaks or bicycles. There are several companies that rent kayaks and paddleboards and they also offer kayaking/paddleboarding trips and one company offers delivery service. Bring your own - there are numerous boat launches in the area - one within a minute's drive and several within a 10 minute drive. Interaction with Guests It's really helpful if you reach out to us the day of your arrival and tell us what time you anticipate arriving. Instructions for entering the apartment are provided. Although we cannot guarantee that we will be available to greet you upon arrival, we will most likely be available at some point during your stay to meet you. There may be a few times during the year when we are away and we will let you know if this is the case. If we aren't available during your stay, we will be readily available by cellphone or messaging to answer any questions you have or we will provide you with a local contact person. Upon your arrival, we will be happy to tell you about the local attractions, values and best kept secrets and visit with you in the common area outdoors, however we will also respect your privacy if that is your wish. We have three cats and a dog. For the comfort and safety of our guests with pet allergies, they are not allowed in the guest suite, but you may see them or visit with them if we socialize in our screened porch. We really enjoy conversing and interacting with our guests if that is your wish, so please don't hesitate to ask us if you need to borrow anything and let us know if something isn't working properly or if there is anything that we can do to improve the suite or make your stay more enjoyable. Your satisfaction is very important to us! Always remember - if you need anything, just ask! We are constantly striving to scope out new places to recommend to our guests - guess you just have to stay here to get the "local scoop"! The Neighborhood We are in a residential area conveniently located to many of the area highlights.
You will need a car to get around, but the driving is easy! Harpswell is a paradise for lobster lovers and for those who love seafood of all kinds. Unspoiled beauty abounds! Late June, July, August and September are simply enchanting here! Nearby Brunswick is a college town, so there's plenty to do there - lots of restaurants, several museums and beaches and trails that you can walk along every day of the year. We love our town! We are literally surrounded by saltwater here. We are directly across the road from the New Meadows River. This saltwater river goes out to Casco Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Our home is located midway between the fun and charming town of Brunswick and the city of Bath (The City of Ships, voted "best main street" recently) We are on Great Island in Harpswell on the way to Orr's Island and Bailey Island (all part of Harpswell). The peninsula of South Harpswell is just across the Mountain Road. Eat out in one of our local ethnic, seafood or American unique or chain restaurants, visit the Bowdoin College campus, take in a show at Maine State Music Theatre, attend a summer music concert, do some yoga or Zumba at a local studio, or drive and explore the coast. The possibilities are endless and affordable. This area is a year-round destination for enjoying Maine hospitality and scenery. Grocery stores and many shops and restaurants are within 5 to 15 minutes by car. There is a highly rated "seafood shack" (byob or buy beer and wine) with takeout and a country store with an excellent beer, wine and alcohol selection just about 2 minutes away by car. Another favorite outdoor seafood place (byob) - Erica's - is located on the other side of Harpswell and is open from Mother's Day Weekend to Columbus Day Weekend. Erica's is a must see destination soon to be featured in Coastal Living Magazine. This area is ideal for those who want to kayak, bicycle or go on leisurely hikes. Bring your kayaks, bicycles, bathing suit and walking shoes! Kayak tours offered in the area with all gear provided or you can rent kayaks and explore on your own. Harpswell and the neighboring towns of Topsham, Bath and Brunswick have many nature preserves, hiking trails, public boat launches, a riverfront bicycle trail, river and ocean views and walks. What's really great is that many of the natural scenery can be enjoyed for free - so you can plan a whole day for only the cost of your food - brown bag it, get takeout, or dine in a restaurant. There are 184 restaurants in total in the towns of Harpswell, Brunswick, Bath and Topsham according to TripAdvisor. For nature enthusiasts, get a taste of what you can see by going to the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust website.
Brunswick also has Bowdoin College with Maine State Music Theatre and the International Music Festival throughout the summer. Bowdoin College also has two museums (an Arctic and an art museum) and the Chamberlain House Museum is just across the street. Bowdoin often has events and performances that are open to the public. So much to do -consignment store shopping, watching a movie at the nearby feature film movie theater or the independent movie theater or dinner and a film option at the Frontier cafe. There are three movie theaters in Brunswick - one that shows feature films is just up the road! We are just off Route 1, so we're in a great location to explore Mid Coast Maine for day trips. Visit Rockland/Camden/Rockport, Wiscasset, Boothbay Harbor, Damariscotta all within an hour and 20 minutes or less drive. The Maine Maritime Museum is located in Bath. It offers river cruises in the summer. Intriguing Portland (with a tremendous number of restaurants, bars, museums, etc.) is an easy 35 minute drive. Augusta, Maine's capitol city, is also about 40 minutes away. Take a noontime scenic cruise of Casco Bay just down the road from us on Bailey Island. USA's #1 voted favorite place (according to Good Morning America 2014 poll) Acadia National Park is a three hour drive. Also if you are checking out Bowdoin College for your son or daughter or attending a reunion, we are less than a 15 minute drive from the campus.
We have a whole basket filled with brochures, so you can put off the planning until you arrive and then comfortably explore the area. All of our guests have used our Harpswell Heritage Land Trust brochure with a map, description and directions to some amazingly beautiful places that require only an easy hike or drive to visit. There is also a small indoor heated pool (no hot tub) and fitness center at a hotel just up the road. You can purchase a pass for unlimited use for a day or a week. Getting Around There is no public transit to our home, so a car is a necessity. Once you get here, you will find that the driving is very easy and relaxing- especially in Harpswell! The Amtrak train and the bus from Boston stop in Brunswick (15 minutes away by car). Car rental is an option. The Portland airport is 45 minutes by car or taxi.
