A trip to the U.K. for your vacation can become quite costly if you don’t know where to go. Luckily, these five cheapest destinations in the U.K. are all vacation options that boast beautiful nature escapes and artsy activities that won’t break the bank. Better still, many of the best things to do in these cheap U.K destinations are free!

1. Liverpool

Known as the “World Capital of Pop,” Liverpool stands out as a cheap place to visit in the U.K., with many free attractions and entertainment events. Musical artists play throughout the city – in large venues and quaint, intimate bars as well. Beyond music, check out Liverpool’s Merseyside Maritime Museum to see models of ships that tell the history of this seaside city. For an outdoor adventure, the 200+ acre Sefton Park is just a 15-minute bus ride from the center of town. Learn more about the region’s sporting heritage at three historic football clubs and the world’s finest stretch of championship golf.

2. Nottingham

Nottingham is one of the U.K.’s cheapest destinations, with an average hotel costing around 64 pounds. Best known as the home of Robin Hood, this cultural destination boasts attractions like the two large theaters as well as art galleries. The historic Lace Market by the Old Market Square is a national heritage zone that was once the heart of Britain’s lace industry. Explore the old warehouses, now home to many shops, restaurants and lace makers. At the National Justice Museums, you can visit exhibits on crime and punishment, as well as displays of the city’s hero, Robin Hood. Medieval ceramics and jade jewelry are on display in the Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery. And don’t miss out on touring the City of Caves in Nottingham to explore more than 450 caves beneath the city.

3. Glasgow

In Glasgow all major museums and galleries are free. This means free entrance to parks, gardens, historic buildings, and even some events. That means you can admire the Gothic architecture of the Glasgow Cathedral, dating back to the 13th century gratis. Or explore the Gallery of Modern Art and Botanic Gardens at no cost. With over 90 public parks and gardens and 50 architectural landmarks, Glasgow is a surefire cheap vacation for nature- and art-lovers.

4. Birmingham

Birmingham is a great option for a budget vacation, as a hotel room costs around 62 pounds. Explore the Tolkien Trail to discover the influences of JRR Tolkien, where he lived, played and studied. The trail passes through a millhouse, its gardens, and the nature preserve of Moseley Bog. Take advantage of the free food and craft markets throughout the year at the Mac, as well as free admission to Mac’s art complex and its exhibits. Pass through the Jewellery Quarter, with numerous jewelry businesses as well as a museum, and view the colorful crystals and minerals at the Lapworth Museum of Geology, all free of charge.

5. Leeds

In Leeds, a hotel stay averages 65 pounds, and cocktails average 15 pounds for two.  Leeds’ many galleries and trails are amongst the many free things to do in this budget-friendly destination. Feed the ducks at Roundhay Park’s beautiful lake amidst 700 acres of park and traverse Leeds Owl Trail to discover 25 different types of owls. Admire the ruins and picnic in the lawns of Kirkstall Abbey, one of Leeds most important landmarks.
