Did you think all beachfront property was occupied by cookie-cutter mansions? Here’s a new take on the classic beach bungalow. Housed inside of a refurbished shipping container, this home has a unique look and is incredibly environmentally-friendly due to its use of recycled materials. Inside, things are cozy and simple, but the same wouldn’t necessarily be said for the surrounding environment. What may look like an old rural barn (which it is) on its last legs, actually has some major castle vibes on the interior. Located just outside of the US’s most visited national park, the Great Smokey Mountains, the Little River Barn sits right on the park’s Tennessee border. The accommodations take up the entirety of the old grain silo, and thanks to its long vertical nature, the home rental is split into four stories. The stone, cement, and wood features inside give the silo its Medieval luxury feel.

The Northern Lights are an obvious addition on many people’s bucket lists. However, the execution of actually seeing them can be a lot more difficult. To see the lights in all their glory requires going north of the 60-degree latitude mark (basically the Arctic) in the winter; but slugging through brutally cold conditions can be a lot more enticing when there is a nice rental accommodation to go home to and warm up in.
As for choosing a country to see the lights, Finland, Sweden, Russia, Canada, and Iceland have stunning Northern Lights displays. However, our favorite spot is in the Norwegian city of Tromsø, known as “The Paris of the North”. The city offers views of nature’s light show dancing above frozen seas and snow covered mountains. Renting the Robukta Lodge is truly one of the most luxurious travel experiences the world has to offer, as watching the Northern Lights from an outdoor hot tub is reserved for a select few lucky people.

On Russia’s Untouched Coast!
Looking for somewhere that emphasizes the “literally anywhere” part of where to book a vacation rental? How about Russia’s East Coast? The Kamchatka Peninsula is one of the most remote and untouched places in the world. Although the peninsula alone is about the size of Norway, only around 300,000 people live here, and that number is continuously dropping. The largest city is Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and naturally, visitors can book a vacation rental here. Kamchatka is well worth visiting as it’s home to Russia’s most stunning beaches and numerous adventure activities like volcano mountaineering and heli-skiing.

In the Outback!
The Outback is famous for being one of the remote places in the world — and the ”Red Centre” located in Australia’s Northern Territory is the finest example of Outback conditions. We are talking arid desert, dingoes eatin’ babies, and plenty of other things to get locals to shout “crikey”. But The Top End (the colloquial nickname for the Northern Territory) isn’t devoid of people, or vacation rentals. The region’s two largest cities are Darwin and Alice Springs, and since Darwin is along the tropical coast, we recommend finding a place to set up shop in Alice Springs, a more authentic Outback experience. Anywhere in the US’s Least Densely Populated State!
While Wyoming may have the smallest number of people in the United States, Alaska is significantly less-densely populated. And yes, you can book a vacation rental in the Last Frontier too. From Point Barrow, the US’s northernmost point, down to the capital Juneau, there are tons of places to stay. Our favorites though, are the Orca Island Cabins on Seward’s Resurrection Bay. This small community of yurts offers some of the best views in the world. Anywhere where the best way to explore the area around a vacation rental is by kayak is a cool place in our book.

In the Amazon!
The Amazon River and Rainforest, often referred to as “The Green Hell” thanks to its seemingly impassable jungles, diseases, and treacherous wildlife. Back in the Golden Age of Exploration the Amazon famously brought brave explorers more death than glory… but surprise, there are vacation rentals there too. Things may be slightly more civilized, but renting a home somewhere in the Amazon will definitely still earn you some travel street cred. Manaus in Brazil is the Amazon’s largest city and a good place to begin searching.

Private island retreat in one of the most beautiful places in the world? Yes please. Called Brother Island, near El Nido in the Philippines, this rental is quite literally an entire island.
